A new permanent job doesn’t automatically mean a six-month wait. What a lender looks at is how long you’ve been in the role, whether you’re on probation, whether it’s the same occupation or industry as before, how much year-to-date (YTD) income is on your payslip, and what evidence is available. Some policies are genuinely more flexible than others on this exact scenario.
A worked example
Say you started a permanent role one month ago, you’re on probation, but you’ve spent the previous five years in the same industry with no employment gap, and you have two recent payslips with a short YTD figure. On the surface this looks thin, one month, probation, short YTD. In practice, several things can offset that: the five-year same-industry history, continuity between roles, and whether your specific lender treats probation as a hard stop or a case-by-case question.
What actually varies by lender
| Factor | What can differ |
|---|---|
| Current-role tenure | Ranges from no stated minimum in some policies through to 3 or 6 months in others |
| Probation | Accepted outright in some policies, case-by-case in others, must be completed in some |
| Payslip evidence | One strong recent payslip can be enough in some policies; others want two, or a prior-year figure too |
| Short current tenure | Can be offset by continuous employment in the same occupation or industry, under many (not all) policies |
| Higher LVR | Can tighten evidence/tenure requirements further under some policies |
The useful question is never just “am I permanent?”, it’s the combination of tenure, probation status, industry continuity and evidence quality together.
What to prepare
- Your most recent payslip(s), one or two, depending on how much YTD history they show
- Employment contract or a simple letter confirming your start date and permanent status
- Prior financial-year income evidence, in case your current YTD is short
- A brief written timeline of your employment history if you’ve changed roles recently
